Lizzie Thomas is a premier jazz vocalist in New York City, performing alongside some of the genre's most iconic names. Known for her storytelling, adventurous arrangements, and stunning vocal ability, Lizzie’s dedication to the Great American Songbook has solidified her place in the city's vibrant jazz scene.

Born in Pittsburgh, raised in the South, and educated at Belmont in Nashville, Lizzie burst onto the New York City jazz scene. Her critically acclaimed albums, New Sounds From The Jazz Age and Duo Encounters, established her as a leading voice in jazz. However, in this most recent chapter of her life, Lizzie is embracing a new direction—one profoundly personal and emotionally resonant—as she branches out into original music with her forthcoming seventh album, Awakening.

Her mother's passing spurred this creative shift, acting as a personal and artistic turning point. Raised in a household where emotions were tamped down, Lizzie turned to music as a means of release. First, through the piano and later through collaborations with fellow musicians, music became her way to express her emotions.  Sitting in front of the piano can feel lonely, but embracing the improvisational spirit of jazz opened the door to a world of connection and expression. This journey eventually led to collaborations and appearances with jazz greats, performing and/or recording with icons such as Ron Carter, the late Russell Malone, John Di Martino, Wayne Escoffery, Helio Alves, Neal Smith, and the Harlem String Quartet, among others.

As Lizzie experienced profound loss with the passing of her mother in June 2023 and her best friend in August 2024, her creative and emotional awakening began to take shape. This transformation wasn't solely driven by grief but by energetically waking up and questioning everything she had been taught.  She finally felt permission to find her voice. The songs on Awakening poured out between June and November 2023, influenced by this shift and a newfound sense of clarity. Lizzie describes experiencing clairaudience—hearing melodies and words in meditation, dreams, and daily life—allowing these songs to flow through her.

Awakening is an intimate project that blends Neo-soul, R&B, and Jazz. It explores Lizzie’s full range of musicality and is a testament to her journey of self-discovery and emotional healing. Her mission is to take others on similar journeys by sharing, listening, and inviting her listeners to move through their own experiences.

The first single from Awakening, “Community,” offers a message of unity combining jazz sophistication with Neo-soul sensuality. The accompanying video serves as a love letter to the people of New York, and the song sets the tone for an album rich with layers of emotion, healing, and self-awareness.

The album’s title track exudes a feeling of glorious self-discovery. Here, the refrain “harmony” is a mantra for inner peace and abundance. Adding to its stately beauty, “Awakening” features the Grammy-winning Harlem String Quartet.

The dreamy “Home” came as a nighttime reverie in which Lizzie saw her deceased mother floating and dancing as a blue spectral image. She sings: “The way the light moves through you/I can see we’ve danced before/And in your eyes I see a sunset/And the stories yet to unfold.”

Reflecting on her mother’s passing, Lizzie says, "I feel closer to my mom now that she's passed. I feel a deeper sense of connection to her, and she can help me now that she's not on this plane.

Recorded at the iconic Powerstation in NYC, Awakening features a close-knit group of musicians who have collaborated with some of the most celebrated names in jazz, soul, and beyond. Together, they’ve created a record that marks Lizzie’s evolution as an artist/producer and serves as a beacon of feminine empowerment, spirituality, and emotional liberation.

Lizzie Thomas continues to tour globally, which she has done for 16 years, exploring jazz standards while evolving as a songwriter, blending her classical piano training with a passion for storytelling. “I’ve spent a lifetime exploring the jazz canon, the greatest songs ever written,” she reflects. “But I’m also asked to be a vessel for my songs, which are imprints from my heart. I am now finding my purest expression through these songs.  I feel my mission is to share them to serve humanity.”
