My Jazz Story
I was first exposed to jazz...in second grade. Herb Wong, at the time a principal at Washington Elementary School in Berkeley CA had a vision to expose
elementary children to music/jazz. So he hired Phil Hardymon and Dick Whittington. From 2nd to 6th grades we performed everywhere. By our 6th grade
we were invited to the Reno Jazz Festival, at the time the first ever elementary school to ever be invited. The formation of this elementary school jazz from
Berkeley would become the foundation for what is now the international famous Berkeley High School Jazz Band.
