Ali Farka Toure

Born:

A unique tale of a world respected musician, who deep in his heart considered himself but a humble farmer. Ali Farka Touré was born in 1939 in the village of Kanau on the banks of the River Niger in the north west of Mali. He was his mothers’ tenth son but the first to survive infancy. When Ali was still an infant his father died while serving in the French army, and the family moved south along the river to Niafunké, the village Ali called home for the rest of his life. People make their living by farming, cattle herding and fishing. There is no tradition of music in his family, but he had a calling early on in life, becoming drawn to music by its power

Vieux Farka Toure Kleinhans Music HallBuffalo, NYApril 27, 2025 A spinning top occasionally wobbles. Our spinning earth does the same thing: it's called the “Chandler Wobble." Because of the Chandler Wobble, monsoon rains in the Sahara appear then disappear every 21,000 years. This alternating cycle of “Green Sahara" and Sahara Desert ...

Sandman Project: Where Did You Go?

Read "Where Did You Go?" reviewed by Chris May

Anyone who has made multiple visits to Goa, where they formed the Goa Afrobeat Band--as Tel Aviv-based guitarist and composer Tal Sandman has done--is self-evidently on the right team. Sandman lives in the Jaffa neighbourhood in southside Tel Aviv, an area in which Jews and Arabs live cheek by jowl, and diverse cultures co-exist, and where, ...

Pino Palladino: The Craftsman from Wales

Read "Pino Palladino: The Craftsman from Wales" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Refined craftsmanship is in small supply in today's music business, especially in the music business that fills sports arena or large music venues. Pino Palladino belongs to the small guild of refined craftsmen whose membership is reserved to musicians who do not seek the spotlight but pursue beauty through art, because that is what they were ...

Sandman Project: Royal Family

Read "Royal Family" reviewed by Chris May

Guitarist Tal Sandman's raw, groovecentric, transcultural Sandman Project draws a hefty chunk of its provenance from Ethio-jazz. The band's EP Royal Family does not contain enough improvisation to qualify as “jazz" however. Further, the Ethio-jazz in the mix, mostly contributed by trumpeter Tal Avraham and bass guitarist Shay Hazan, is less forward than the echoes of ...

Peo Alfonsi e Derek Gripper: chitarra classica, tra musica colta e popolare

Read "Peo Alfonsi e Derek Gripper: chitarra classica, tra musica colta e popolare" reviewed by Mario Calvitti
