Cannonball Adderley

Born:

Both as the leader of his own bands as well as an alto and soprano saxophone stylist, Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley was one of the progenitors of the swinging, rhythmically robust style of music that became known as hard-bop. Born September 15, 1928, into a musical family in Florida, Adderley was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He became leader of the 36th Army Dance Band, led his own band while studying music at the U.S. Naval Academy and then led an army band while stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Originally nicknamed "Cannibal" in high school for his voracious appetite, the nickname mutated into "Cannonball" and stuck. In 1955, Adderley traveled to New York City with his younger brother and lifelong musical partner, Nat Jr. (cornet)

How Creedence Clearwater Revival Saved Jazz

Read "How Creedence Clearwater Revival Saved Jazz" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

By 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival was arguably the biggest rock and roll group in America--if not the world. Songs like “Proud Mary" (Fantasy 1969), “Green River" (Fantasy 1969) and “Born on the Bayou" (Fantasy 1969) dominated both Top 40 and album-oriented radio, and their music continues to thrive decades later, becoming a staple of classic rock ...

When something sparks her creativity, Laura Dreyer is the sort of person who jumps in with both feet and gets right down to business. A multi-hyphenate artist, saxophonist-flutist-composer-teacher-clinician, she has been serious about jazz since junior high school in jny: El Cerrito, California, across the bay from jny: San Francisco. “El Cerrito High had an award-winning--like ...

From Fad To Phenomenon: The Lasting Legacy Of Record Store Day

Read "From Fad To Phenomenon: The Lasting Legacy Of Record Store Day" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

Despite its growing popularity, some still view the vinyl resurgence as a passing trend that will eventually fade. Articles frequently appear in newspapers and magazines almost celebrating any dip in vinyl sales. In late 2024, for example, several headlines noted that vinyl sales were down 33%--somewhat ironic, considering that an LP spins at 33 1/3 RPM. ...

The Hidden Gems alluded to by guitarist Brent Laidler on his third recording as leader comprise unique and seductive melodies and chord changes he uncovered while taking time during the Covid pandemic to skim through and sight-read some 14,000 tunes in 'fake books' and on his laptop computer, most of which never made it past that ...

Gravity and Resurgence: The Many Dimensions of Dexter Gordon

Read "Gravity and Resurgence: The Many Dimensions of Dexter Gordon" reviewed by Arthur R George

Long Tall Dexter; swinger, bebopper, saxophone balladeer; acting the dissipated genius expatriate who was not unlike himself in the movie Round Midnight; his dressed-up persona “Society Red;" the laconic elder statesman of his later years. Dexter Gordon is all those things, but more than a kaleidoscope of caricatures. Those who trace their lineages through ...

I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu

Read "I Dischi del 2024 secondo Ludovico Granvassu" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu
