About the Album
“Griot Songs” is the project that composer Omar Thomas has wanted to do ever since he formed his Large Ensemble in 2008. It is a soul stirring, heady examination of how Thomas views his role as an heir to the griot tradition living and creating musical art in the modern era. His 17-piece orchestra brings his ideas into fruition with verve and passion. The track “Obeah Woman” was inspired by Thomas’ own childhood, growing up in a Guyanese-American family in the vibrant Caribbean community in Brooklyn. The sophisticated track shows how Thomas is one of the most thoughtful and original compositional voices of our time.
